Great Springtime Hikes in Maine

For avid hikers, Maine is the perfect place to spend this spring. With warm weather days and cool evenings, Maine features a comfortable and beautiful place to reconnect with nature.

Maine is known for its gorgeous springs and summers that make it an ideal place to enjoy all the great outdoors has to offer. The top place for hikers is surely Maine’s version of the Finger Lakes. Located about 15 miles northwest of Portland sits Sebago Lake – which serves as the “palm” of the lakes – with Thompson Lake, Long Lake, Highland Lake and Moose Pond serving as the four fingers.

Thompson Lake, in particular, is incredibly beautiful and is rated as one of the 10 best lakes in Maine for water quality. It is spring-fed by the Poland Spring Aquifer and features stunning views of the pristine and relatively untouched region. Thompson Lake features 12 miles of shoreline, allowing hikers to circumvent the lake and see views of the lake from all different angles.

If you’re looking for more of a challenge, Thompson Lake is also near a number of nearby hiking destinations such as Blueberry Mountain, which has an elevation just shy of 3,000 feet. When you reach the summit, you can get a 360-degree view of some of the other peak mountains in the area, such as the Bigelows and Mount Washington.

The hike is definitely a challenge for hikers of all skills. While there are steep spots along the way, hikers are rewarded for their effort with bird stands lining the lower section of the trail and blueberry bushes that offer up their treats in July and August.
