Skiing at Thompson Lake and Other Winter Fun

If you’re thinking of moving to Thompson Lake, you’ll be happy to find that winter is a truly magical time to be the area. In my last blog, I wrote about ice fishing on Thompson Lake, a relaxing pastime that brings friends and family together year after year.

As we gear up for the home stretch of winter in Maine, families might begin to crave some additional excitement. Furthermore, the Sochi Winter Olympics have the whole world focused on winter sports, interested in the fun thrill that racing downhill at high speeds can provide. For those who like experiencing winter activities like skiing and snowboarding for themselves, I’m happy to report that there are plenty of ski resorts close to Thompson Lake:

  • Sunday River in Newry, ME boasts a 2,340 foot vertical drop, the second largest in all of Maine. At Sunday River, the fun doesn’t stop when the weather warms up. Instead, it turns into an exciting summer resort with golf, mountain biking, and even zip lining.
  • Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, ME is situated on the Northern end of Pleasant Mountain, a name that’s quite fitting to the atmosphere of this cozy resort, which dates back all the way to 1938.
  • Mount Abram in Greenwood, ME is a large resort broken into two areas. One portion of the mountain is a designated beginner’s area, with “bunny hills” and ski lessons, while the main portion serves more experienced visitors. At Mount Abram, every trail is named after the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon.
  • Lost Valley in Auburn, ME was founded by Otto Wallingford, an apple farmer who also happened to create Maine’s first snow powder maker. In the summer months, Lost Valley is converted to a competitive paintball facility.

While there’s nothing quite like skiing around Thompson Lake, Maine, some residents might prefer a more scaled-back, family friendly winter activity. I highly recommend the winter fun parks in the area, including Seacoast Adventure Snow Park and Oxford Plains Snow Tubing. Both parks feature downhill tubing, with automatic lifts, and are great places for winter birthday parties.
