Feeling Fall: Looking Ahead to Foliage Season

September 28th, 2016 Terry Hewitt

Things to Do Near Thompson LakeNow that we’re heading into the prime of the fall season, beautiful foliage displays are showing up throughout the Thompson Lake area. To make sure you don’t miss out on any of it, let’s explore some of the top places in the Lakes Region to check out the views this fall.

If you’re a foliage fan who loves to take long rides to try and take it all in, then you may want to head up to Skowhegan around the second week of October. This tends to be the peak of foliage season for the area, which will surely maximize your experience. Plus, from the Thompson Lake area, your journey will take you along the shores of many of the region’s many bodies of water, offering sterling views of the autumn colors over the waters of the lakes region.

From there, you can take your trip deeper into the heart of Maine, heading north through Peaks-Kenny State Park and Moosehead Lake taking in all of the foliage those places have to offer. Really passionate about the fall colors? Take your trip for a full loop by next heading west toward Jackman and then finish by heading south along the tree-lined Kennebec River. When that ride is complete, you should have seen enough beautiful foliage to last you until next year.

On the other hand, if you would rather stay in one place and take in all it has to offer closer to home, there are several parks to choose from nearby. Sebago Lake and Range Ponds state parks offer plenty of space to take in the beautiful trees along the lake shores. Plus, in addition to the foliage, the parks offer visitors an opportunity to get out and enjoy activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and picnicking.

For even more on fall foliage, check out the Maine foliage map from the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.
